Driven by the global spirit of the Wikimedia movement, our work is anchored in principles that empower individuals and communities to participate, protect free access, and celebrate shared human knowledge.

The Language Gap

For centuries, the Hausa language has carried stories of scholarship, trade, and vibrant culture across generations. But as the world moved online, a massive gap emerged.
The internet became a place where our language was spoken, culture debated, tradition celebrated, and identities fluidly expressed in social forums; but all of them rarely structurally documented.

Knowledge Equity

Historically, the internet, and Wikipedia itself, have suffered from systemic gaps where information about certain regions, languages, and cultures is heavily documented, while others are severely underrepresented.

The Hausa Wikimedians User Group was founded to bridge this gap and advance free knowledge in line with the global Wikimedia mission. Through strategic collaborations and community-centered engagements, we inspire and empower individuals and institutions with the skills they need to participate in contributing to the sum of all human knowledge.

Knowledge Equity

Knowledge is only truly free if it is accessible in the language one thinks, feels, and dreams in. We strategically work to break down structural biases by inspiring and enabling individuals to participate in contributing to Wikimedia in their own language.

Inclusivity

Every voice matters. We believe our movement thrives on the shared ownership of volunteers and institutions. We inspire, educate, and grow a sustainable ecosystem of diverse contributors working together toward a common Wikimedia vision.

Openness

Much of historical knowledge base of underrepresented languages rests with oral preservation. Our philosophy focuses heavily on utilizing structured datasets, media assets via Wiki Commons, and audio libraries to safely lock down regional dialects and histories.

We champion information that is freely accessible, reusable, and collaborative. We believe knowledge belongs to all humanity and should never be locked behind paywalls or restrictive licenses.

Collaboration

We work with educational institutions, libraries, and other sister Wikimedia affiliates to advance free knowledge and bring offline knowledge assets into the digital open, bringing us closer to the vision of a world where everyone shares in the sum of all human knowledge.
